Post Workout Turmeric Smoothie

You may be most familiar with turmeric as a spice in curry dishes, but the flavor of this post-workout turmeric smoothie is going to change your notions about turmeric forever.

Turmeric has been used for thousands of years in both Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine, but there is much modern research on this amazing spice, as well. Turmeric’s powerful ability to reduce inflammation is behind its use in treating everything from cancer to Alzheimer’s to osteoarthritis.

Turmeric’s anti-inflammatory property comes from the fact it contains curcumin. Curcumin is also a powerful antioxidant. This one-two punch of turmeric/curcumin is what has it so highly regarded in longevity communities as a way to slow down the aging process. As athletes, these same anti-inflammatory and antioxidant powers can help us recover more effectively from our workouts.

Interestingly, turmeric has also been shown to be an effective mouthwash, most likely due to the fact it also possesses antimicrobial properties. And curcumin’s ability to increase our levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is believed to help reduce depression as well as age-related brain disorders.

So, pretty much this smoothie is going to make every part of your body feel good and help you recover from your hard work in all the most important ways. Research has shown that turmeric is best absorbed by the body when paired with a fat, so that’s why we have made this recipe with delicious coconut milk.

Post-Workout Turmeric Smoothie

Serves: 1

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • 1/2 cup frozen mango chunks
  • 1 fresh or frozen medium banana
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger

Directions:

  1. Place all ingredients into your blender.
  2. Blend for 30 seconds to 1 minute, or until it reaches a smooth consistency.

Pour into a glass and enjoy.
